The five Commander brackets
The bracket system is a shared vocabulary for the rule-zero conversation. A deck sits at the bracket of its most restricted card — so a single high-impact card can define the whole list. Here is what each of the five numbers actually allows.
Bracket 1 — Exhibition
Ultra-casual, theme-first decks not built to win. No Game Changers, no mass land denial, no chained extra turns, no two-card infinite combos. This is the only bracket a calculator can't prove for you — it's a promise about how you pilot, not a property of the 99.
Bracket 2 — Core
The precon baseline: a straightforward deck that closes games the fair way. Same restrictions as Exhibition, but built to compete. Most out-of-the-box precons and light upgrades live here.
Bracket 3 — Upgraded
A tuned deck with a few sharp cards. Up to three Game Changers and a single extra-turn effect are allowed; combos are permitted only as a late-game finish. Still no mass land denial. This is where most engaged players' decks land.
Bracket 4 — Optimized
High power, no restrictions. Anything Commander-legal is fair game — four or more Game Changers, mass land denial, early two-card combos, chained extra turns. If a deck can do the scariest things in the format but isn't a tuned cEDH list, it's a 4.
Bracket 5 — cEDH
Competitive EDH: the same card pool as Bracket 4, but built to win as early and consistently as possible. The line between 4 and 5 isn't permission, it's intent and density — fast mana, a stack of tutors, and redundant compact combos.

What is a Commander bracket?
Brackets are the official 1–5 system Wizards introduced so Commander players can communicate a deck's power before a game. They aren't a raw strength rating — they're closer to a permissions list describing which categories of card are in the deck: Game Changers, mass land denial, extra turns, and two-card combos.
How does the bracket calculator decide my bracket?
Paste your decklist and every card is resolved against Scryfall. The tool starts at Bracket 2 and moves up: any Game Changer pushes you to 3, more than three Game Changers or any mass land denial or a two-card combo pushes you to 4, and Bracket 5 requires four or more Game Changers plus fast mana plus either multiple combos or a stack of tutors. Two-card combos are checked against Commander Spellbook using your actual list, not guessed from card text.
What bracket is my deck if I have no combos or Game Changers?
Bracket 2 (Core). A deck with no Game Changers, no mass land denial, no extra-turn effects, and no two-card combo in the Commander Spellbook database reads as Bracket 2. The calculator never outputs Bracket 1 on its own, because there's no card check that proves a deck isn't trying to win — that's a promise you make, not something a list reveals.
Does Sol Ring or fast mana raise my bracket?
No. Fast mana never moves the bracket by itself — a Sol Ring in an otherwise clean deck is still Bracket 2. Fast mana only matters inside the Bracket 5 test and in the separate 0–10 speed score. The card that jumps your bracket is a Game Changer, mass land denial, or a two-card combo.
Why did one card put my deck in Bracket 4?
Because brackets gate the most restricted card in the deck. A single Armageddon (mass land denial) or one two-card infinite combo lands the whole deck at Bracket 4 on its own, regardless of the other 98 cards. The tool lists exactly which card triggered it, so you can see what to cut if you want a lower bracket.
